Our family loves board games and Scrabble is one of our favorites. Scrabble is a wonderful way to teach new vocabulary words and letter formation. It may be a challenge for younger children but they can be teamed up with an older child or adult. Hunter, our 8 year old, surprised us with words like: WRENCH and SILLY.
It is also a wonderful game to teach morphology, the study of the smallest units in a language and how they are used to build new words. It teaches prefixes such as: re, dis, and pre. Suffixes such as: ed, ing, ful, less, and ness. These are only a few of the vast list of prefixes and suffixes. One example of this happened when I placed the word LAX on the board, and Hunter realizing he had an E and an R placed them in front of LAX to create RELAX. He was very proud of himself and, of course, we were proud of him too.

The study of language also known as linguistics, can be fascinating and can definitely develop a child into a very smart reader. Teaching a child language will help them break words apart to understand their meaning. So break out the Scrabble game and see how many words your children can create with the seven tiles they pull out of the bag. Use the game as a teaching tool to teach word parts and vocabulary. Also throw a little fun in there and you will be amazed at how much they learn and retain by playing Scrabble.
