4 Tips for Creating a Library

I have been working on a library of my own for my boys.  I found a few tips that might help you build one as well.

• Pick a location in the house that makes sense. If you want them to access the library at bedtime, create one in or near their rooms. If most of the reading is done in the family spaces, dedicate a corner of the main living area for this purpose.

• Rotate the book selection. Every once in a while, rotate out the books in the library. This will help keep things fresh. I like to coordinate some of the book selection to the nature table we keep. I also like to tuck in special books and surprise the kids.

• Create special themes. You can also base your book selection to certain themes - animals, nature, outings, food, etc. Kids love to read a bunch of books on the same theme or topic. We've also organized the bookshelf to feature only all red books or all blue books to see if the kids will notice. They have!

• Set some rules. Like a real library, it's good to set some rules about using the library. For instance, insist that they return the books they've checked out before getting more books.
